Artist Struggles

I discussed the publishing of this photo with my brother, because it is such a personal story of an artist’s discouragement; it is from the artist journal of my late father.   This is poignant for me as it echoes the place I am in my own work; that struggle for vision.

Posting

This is a post about posting.  I get errors every time I post.  Warning! Warning! It is anxiety inducing.  The search for inspiration is meant to be calming. Perhaps this obstacle is wind in the road.

Jacquard: Squam

These are some Jacquard fabrics that were created from photographs of Great Island in the early morning. First I photographed, then painted and drew.  I scanned the drawings into the computer and then created six end satin weaves from this.  It is an end on end warp and at that time, at Rhode Island School of Design, the loom was new and Phil, the operator, would allow us to bring as many yarns as we wanted so I had twelve weave structures to play with and unlimited yarn mixing.  It is an end on end black white upholstery warp and it is a 27 inch repeat, so will work for upholstery.

More of my Jacquard collections can be found here.

Time has gotten away already

The half hour for blogging got eaten up by registering a vehicle.  My schedule has changed.  10:30-11:00 blog work.

This exercise of looking at the posts is very interesting.  I have a new impetus now, to look.  I must, however, always respect the Muse.

Time Scheduling Being in the World

The water droplets  on this iris bud appeared at 5:30 last night.  I am certain that this bud existed precisely as this photo captured it for less time than it takes me to write this sentence.  There are so many things in the world.  In order to find my path, I need to schedule time to look at it.  Today I squeezed in half an hour for concentration. I posted today’s schedule below.  I can reflect, tonight, if I deviated, and, if so, why.image image

Fully Spring

It is finally fully spring. I miss the jacquard looms. This kind of image always makes me think of weaving. I love the light in the greenish yellow and the gray.

What Happens if you pour Molten Aluminum in a Watermelon?

I love molten aluminum, ever since I watched the aluminum pours at RISD as a graduate student.  So when I came across this video, I knew it would be a completely unexpected thing.  To melt aluminum in the back yard, to make such a discovery- would be a very fine thing.

Oh!!!

It is very interesting.  I have found, over the years, that I often find the most difficult way to do something, and then I do that. I had many talks with my father concerning this very thing.  This photo is during the last walk we had together.  We were discussing the merits of crossing a stream on slippery rocks.
