58/365: Sun Appears

I have been in the house two weeks, only out twice. Now the sun is coming out and will melt this snow away. Probably will not see any again until next year.

56/365 Cows Dwarfed by the Mountain

Sometimes I am just overwhelmed by the scale of things as I pass by. The hills are steep and rise sharply out of the meadows. The cows look very small against the mountainside

I have had such fun this week exploring tones. These images of the country side are almost black and white even without doing anything to them. I was always taught early on my first photographer teacher was all about capturing the shot and the full frame.

The shovel

This is my driveway I have been shoveling this week. I put a picture of my shovel. Here is the conversation I had with Emily:

Me: “It took me 6 Hours to shovel the Driveway which is .10 mile.”
Emily: “You need a better shovel.”
Me: “Here is a picture of my shovel.”
Emily: “You mean you really DO need a better shovel!”

48/365: Color without Color

[singlepic id=121 w= h= float=none]

We have a lot of snow for Tennessee. I am enjoying taking pictures of it while it lasts. It is fun that the theme this week is tones because it is one of my favorite subjects anyway. It is giving more impetus to my daily shots.

This is for the tonal challenge. The sepia tones are unaltered. It is exactly as it looked on my walk.

46/365: First Snow: Before Dawn

Uploading these now, a week later, I had no idea the snow that was in store. I thought this was a lot! The color of this is exactly as it was this early morning. It is often very very blue. The sun rises over the mountains to the right out of the picture, hence the pink reflection on the shed.

27/365: Cold Sunrise

The snow was piling up in New England. Here in Stoney Creek we had echoes, flurries, and cold sunshine.

24/365: Winter Pond

It doesn’t snow very often here and the water does not freeze over. I felt lucky to capture this pond. Luckily the bull has been taken away for the winter.

7/365: Incoming Snowstorm

It never ceases to amaze me how you can see the weather change over the distant mountains. The sun was shining so brightly in one part of the sky, but there was a snowstorm in the distance.

the life of the grass

This is the kind of thing I am thinking of now. I dont know where it will go. Often the imagery is in a nebulous place first. I want to focus on grasses and maybe the minimalist quality, contrast of land and sky, but yet the evidence of the life of the grass through the snow is where it begins.

12 of 12 January 2011

The sun is just rising on the new day, on the frozen landscape Studio ready for the next day of work, sun coming in at eight am Biscuits and gravy for breakfast, they feed everyone quite heartily here, especially the blacksmiths! I am showing the students how to do a monoprint on a screen Today I visited the bread baking studio next door. They give us samples every day. Today they were doing sourdough. This is their wood fired oven. The samples on the line, freezing in the snow. They were very smelly. I took a walk to visit some of the other studios today, giving my students some requested work time to process all the new information. This is the painting studio. Glad for my LL Bean sheepskin boots in the mud and snow! Finally get to use my New England gear. After classes were over, went to the blacksmith forge and watched the smith forge a knife. He made it out of an old file. Then on the way to supper stopped and saw the dollmakers. They were working on hands today. The sun went down as I walked to supper. After supper, more studio, and now I am uploading these in the library before I go to bed, I will be in bed by ten I hope!

Birthday Twelve of Twelve December 12

I began my December Twelve Birthday in front of the fireplace, painting the wood pile I can see a snow storm is brewing looking out the front door. We are hunkered down. Just a little melted snow from the last storm in the side yard. The rain came first you can see the clouds behind our new house we will be renting We went up to check the water pipes and this is how it looks from up there I like the yard of the new house and feeling close to the storm clouds. We went to the wood pile at the shop and loaded up the truck. Plenty of wood to keep warm! this is what I was drawing. Snow began around midday. This is the back yard from the back porch.10.jpgEarly evening but it is dark with the beginning powdering of snow. Dan cooked us Steaks for my birthday dinner in front of the fireplace on the little grill.

Photos of the ice storm December 2008

There was an ice storm in Goshen in the winter of 2008.  It is hard to imagine it was this long ago.  There was so much ice and snow; we were visiting New England over Christmas. We were stranded with good friends, plenty of food, no elecricity or water for over a week.

I took so many pictures.  The light in the ice was an infinite maze of line and form.   am fascinated by the close up view, the way soft forms are encased in the ice, wish I could learn to manipulate glass and recreate it. It was like being in a crystal palace.
