it can sometimes be very difficult to maintain straightness of thought within the wind of events around me. I try to make my work desk an island but the outside wind comes and pulls me.

A sign?

I think I am being sent a sign from the universe. I just had a second inquiry on an unrelated art piece from another potential client; I always dreamed of just putting my art out into the world, I wonder if that time in my life is arriving.

I feel as if I am diviing into an unknown, uncharted water.

Watch out what you ask for, I guess……..you will get it!

Getting used to the idea that I will be paid more for making art than for teaching it, at least for the moment.

I am wondering how to find out how to make a list of who can see what on my page.

ok I think i figured it out. Hope this cleans up my profile. I am launching on a campaign to put my professional foot forward, burying into studio, catching up school work, all this stuff……

Finishing Repurposed

Built this box out of an old tobacco basket. It will hold the pieces and be on the gallery floor. Detail of the piece on the table finishing Another detail here you see the corner of the jacquard. It was a photo of trash thrown down the side of Holston Mt detail Time Reflection:name of the piece The tail is going down into the box This shows the bottom of the piece going into the box This shows the bottom of the piece going into the box A better view of the box from above The studio as I finished. More (six) small versions to come next, going to the gallery at Appalacian Cter for Craft. I like it. It is the first of a series. I hae wanted to do this for a long time. It is all stitched front and back. The first successful integration of the jacquard, too.

I did decide to include a little bit of jacquard into the repurposed piece.

The Meaningfulness of Lives

This popped up on my email today and I wanted to share it. I am going through a lot of changes this fall professionally and in my art work.

The Meaningfulness of Lives

God? Conviction? Passionate intensity? What are the qualities that make for a life that matters?

The meaning of life

A meaningful life is distinct from a happy life or a morally good one.

Thinking about little pieces

I am reflecting on the difference between conscious and intermittent thought patterns. I thought I was just going to be able to put the small pieces of fabric together and it would turn into this amalgamated piece. But its impossible, even with the tiniest bits, not to look at the color.

Repurpose project in progress

This is the felted wool I use in my art work, some is repurposed blankets and clothes to begin with, and now, double repurposed as being leftovers made into a new piece. Its for a repurposed art exhibit in Atlanta this fall. I have been saving these bits for years and have had this idea for a long time. This is the sewing and pinning process I use for all my pieces, even the ones that are fourteen feet high.

12 of 12 for July 2011

This was a quiet day at my folks house in Sudbury, just enjoying their company and doing ordinary things.

Setting up for computer tutorial, teaching Mom Mac OS and Microsoft Dad built me a beautiful cover for my pot. It is marine plywood. This is one of my chosen sculpturesDad's sculpture studio is the coolest place in the house except for the basement. He does direct carving in wood. Its four hours later and Mom is still studying, working on the church archives The hundred degree heat blasts the hollyhocks Cant get too far with packing. Its too hot. Looking at the items in the archives as Mom works on them. What a sense of place, there are boxes with three nails....from 1815, nails from the steeple. I went to get my laundry after supper. The light on the daylilies was lovely and just a hot moon over the house across the street. When I came back in, the dishes were done!

The sun is just rising on the new day, on the frozen landscape Studio ready for the next day of work, sun coming in at eight am Biscuits and gravy for breakfast, they feed everyone quite heartily here, especially the blacksmiths! I am showing the students how to do a monoprint on a screen Today I visited the bread baking studio next door. They give us samples every day. Today they were doing sourdough. This is their wood fired oven. The samples on the line, freezing in the snow. They were very smelly. I took a walk to visit some of the other studios today, giving my students some requested work time to process all the new information. This is the painting studio. Glad for my LL Bean sheepskin boots in the mud and snow! Finally get to use my New England gear. After classes were over, went to the blacksmith forge and watched the smith forge a knife. He made it out of an old file. Then on the way to supper stopped and saw the dollmakers. They were working on hands today. The sun went down as I walked to supper. After supper, more studio, and now I am uploading these in the library before I go to bed, I will be in bed by ten I hope!
