Light in the Dark Moon

Light.

I have been doing a lot of thinking about light and darkness, contemplation, placements, and the moon, particularly in the closing of this balsamic Pisces moon and tomorrows dark moon, with the upcoming new moon cycle.

I love the dark moon time.

I do not think of light and darkness as opposites.  Rather, I like to think of darkness as devoid of light, a cup that can be filled even with the tiniest bit of light, and as a place of rest, meditation, and beauty.

It is easy to forget, when thinking of the dark moon, that the sky is so full of light.  You can see in this photograph that the moon blocks away the stars but there is soooo much light reflected and behind it.  There is a huge amount of light in a dark moon.

Humans have taught themselves to fear the dark. To fear death.  To make associations with the dark and “dark shadows in our psyche”.  To avoid the dark and fill it with mercury vapor light, street lights, window lights, doorway lights.

Because we lack night vision, the dark can be terrifying to us. Yet, in any natural cycle, the dark time is a time of retreat and healing, as the bear hibernates in her dark den during the winter months – as seeds rest in the soil – and transformation happens in these pauses of beautiful, light filled darkness.  We do not have to see the light to know it is there.

Dark phase times are natural and part of our life cycle. They are not there just to seek painful answers, although that is part of what we can use this rest time for. They are there to allow us to grow in such a way that we can receive and transmit the light.
